Okay, we’ll cut straight to the chase – Sony has used the GamesCom show in Cologne to reveal the new ‘PS3 Slim’, and it’s going to be released worldwide in the first week of September. There!
What else can we tell you? Well, the new model certainly lives up to it name – it’s 32% smaller, uses 34% less energy and is 36% lighter according to smiley Sony Prez, Kaz Hirai, who showed the new box off to the awed GamesCom masses.
We’re liking those vital statistics so far. Likewise the 120GB hard drive that the PS3 Slim has tucked under the bonnet. Most of all, though, the price is about right – the €299 quoted should translate to £250 or thereabouts in the UK. Coincidentally that’s the same price as will apply to the ‘old’ 80GB PlayStation 3, which will be discounted everywhere from tomorrow until stock finally runs out. Be sure to shop around to find some very tempting bundles – ASDA, for one, is chucking a couple of games in at no extra cost.
And that’s the biggest news coming out of Sony’s GamesCom keynote. However it was also revealed that the BBC iPlayer will arrive soon on the PlayStation Network and that Firmware Update 3.0 will rolled-out shortly, bringing with it a bunch of features and useful shortcuts to make the Xross Media Bar and PlayStation Store less of a chore to navigate. It’s all to the good, we don’t doubt.
We’ll post official pics and more info as soon as a more formal press release is organised. Meantime props to Sony for the new model, the addition of iPlayer and, of course, their rubbish-at-keeping-secrets prowess!
