Rukshan
With over ten years of experience in the local music industry, and having collaborated with just about anyone who’s anyone in the hip hop and rap scene you could say Rukshan Mark has ‘arrived’ with his debut English album Brown Eyes.
The album, which dabbles in a bit of everything R&B, Hip Hop, Dance and pop portrays the many different sides to the artist.
Brown Eyes comprises brash and upbeat tracks and softer more mellow tunes like Brown Eyes, which show the artist’s diversity and adventurous sense in music.
The album, while self produced by Rukshan, has traces in its style that can be linked back to music prodigy Ranga Dassanayake who has played a big role not just with Ruskhan but many of the main hip hop artists in town.
Everything on the album, from lyrics and vocal styling to rhythms and the entire structure have gone through the mill in terms of work and re-working thanks to the valuable advice of fellow stars like Krishan Maheson and guest artist Sophia De Guzman.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror online about his past success Rukshan says, “When we started out it was an era that was just opening up, hip hop was just emerging and many in the local music industry didn’t take much notice of us. We had to make it big abroad to make it big here so we have a sense of accomplishment and pride that is pretty special and unique. Now we’ve got air play on most Sinhala and English radio stations and we’ve gone on to do big music videos so the scene is really opening out and it’s been quite an amazing trip.”
Having started his career in 1998 in a musical duo called Charles Mark where he and fellow musician Bertram Charles took Sri Lanka’s youth by storm with Sinhala ballads.
The euphoric success at international level, not merely once but twice over recently at the ‘Astana’ in Kazakhstan during 2003 and 2004 as well as being the first Asian band to win the Universtalent Competition in Europe, propelled Charles Mark to immerse themselves fully in the music business.
Together they worked tirelessly to release their debut album Surangana (Angel) which to date is a big seller thanks to hits like Deshaya, Wanna Hold You and of course the unwavering support and backing of Shane and Nikki of M Entertainment.
Next followed his self titled album included Rukshan’s big hit Aadarae which proved to be enormously successful among local youth in the country. The ‘biggie’ album however was titled Ruki, which featured giant artists like Bonekilla, Krishan, and long time friend and fellow musician Bertram Charles.
Brown Eyes is set to be launched this valentines day and fans can expect a killer concert this year by the Rukshan who will bring together stars old and new who played a role in the artist’s success.
