The Saudi Arabia government has lifted its travel advisory which had been in force since February 2008, advising its citizens not to travel to Sri Lanka due to the then prevailing security situation, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Saudi Arabia said.
The lifting of the travel advisory follows representations made by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh with the concerned authorities.
The Sri Lanka Ambassador in Saudi Arabia, Ahmed A Jawad, during a courtesy call on Prince Saud Al Faisal, Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the need to lift the travel advisory due to the complete cessation of terrorism in Sri Lanka in May last year and the consequent rise in the number of Saudi Arabian tourists visiting the island.
The Embassy in association with the Tourism Development Authority proposes to launch a sustained campaign to promote Sri Lanka as a tourism destination in the high spending Saudi Arabian market shortly.
In the last six months nearly 5,400 Saudi Arabian tourists visited Sri Lanka he said.
