food"Hawker Street" came alive today for the SPICE World Food Festival which will go on until the 18th of July 2010. The festival is part of trying to spice up Colombo's Tourism which has begun to gradually increase. Colombo, Sri Lanka. 16/07/2010

I took a Walk down Green Path this evening and experienced a gastronomic voyage around the world.
The streets took a festive air with live music, Sri Lankan crab cooking competitions, cookery demonstrations with signature chefs, along with special cultural performances giving the visitors a diverse cultural experience to culinary voyage.

The event themed as “World Spice Food Festival Hawkers Street” will showcase the culinary expertise from around the world as part of the World Spice Food Festival 2010 taking place from July 16 onwards.
Last year the event drew in more than 10,000 visitors and once more will be hosted by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.
The festival will bring together the a variety of delectable cuisines ranging from Indian, South African, Malaysian, Indonesian, Philippine, Italian, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, Mediterranean, Singaporean, Chinese, Egyptian and Sri Lankan specialities making it an ideal opportunity for both locals and tourists to enjoy different palates from around the world. Interesting events are lined up along with the best Spiced up Cocktails to try out.

Director General, Sri Lanka Tourism, S. Kalaiselvam said, “Sri Lanka is known to the world for its spices, in the ancient time the merchants were attracted to this small island because of our spices. The spice food festival is celebrated to keep the world informed that Sri Lanka continues to have this very unique attraction for the visitors, to savour the spice cuisine of the World under one roof.“

Inaugurated in 2005 the annual event based on Sri Lanka’s reputation of being an island abundant in spices, to create more dining options for tourists and locals, while providing an opportunity for the Sri Lankan culinary fraternity to exchange culinary know-how with specialty chefs from around the world.
