Resuming their first innings at 312 for two, Sangakkara's 214 - along with an unbeaten 71 from Mahela Jayawardene - helped the hosts reach 457 for two at the lunch break. India struggled to get any movement off a lifeless SSC pitch as both batsmen made light work of the bowling attack, especially during the spin overs. Sangakkara, who picked up from his overnight score of 130, showed no intention of starting slowly. The Sri Lanka captain cracked consecutive boundaries in the first two deliveries of the day and only increased his tempo from then on. Three successive boundaries off Abhimanyu Mithun got Sangakkara his 150, while at the other end Jayawardene prodded away patiently to his 36th Test fifty, having taken double the number of deliveries to do so. However, that was the 33-year-old right-hander's cue to let loose, as he smashed spinner Pragyan Ojha for consecutive boundaries to bring up Sri Lanka's 400. And if the clobbering so far was not enough, Sangakkara ensured yet another 150-run partnership between him and Jayawardene - himself reaching 199 at the end of that over - with the first of four boundaries off Ojha. It came as no surprise then that Sangakkara's seventh Test double hundred came with a four past third man, Harbhajan Singh the victim this time, as the hosts comfortably negotiated the final few overs before lunch.
