120337_2Sri Lanka and India fought a tense battle on a gripping final day, with the visitors gradually tilting the scales in their favour as they aimed for a series-levelling win. Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman survived a probing spell from Suraj Randiv, batting positively amid some fortune, to steady India after the early loss of nightwatchman Ishant Sharma.

In his second Test, Randiv was charged with the role of lead spinner and he kept coming at the Indians relentlessly. Though his first few deliveries were misdirected, Randiv gained enough bite and turn from a newish ball and tested the batsmen.

He attacked Tendulkar from round the wicket with two close-in fielders on the leg side, and kept them interested as Tendulkar tried to ensure the runs didn't dry up. Tendulkar closed the face often, used the paddle, made room to cut Randiv from the stumps and even stepped out of his crease. The positive intent reflected his determination to see India through, but his stay could have been cut short when he offered a straightforward bat-pad chance, which was dropped by Tillakaratne Dilshan at short leg.

Tendulkar shrugged off the close shave soon enough and continued batting steadily with a couple of boundaries through mid-off and fine leg. The support he received from Laxman at the other end, however, was crucial to India edging the session.

Laxman's performances this series have been understated, but he's been responsible, among others, for India's recovery in each of his innings. Today, he was at his most comfortable, picking singles with ease and finding gaps consistently to gradually increase Sri Lanka's worries. The wrist worked its charm with a couple of delightful drives on either side of the pitch off Ajantha Mendis and Laxman negotiated the less effective pace of both Chanaka Welegedara and Lasith Malinga as the ball grew older.

Laxman's assuredness was a contrast to the edginess of Ishant, who was troubled by movement off the deck, and eventually lobbed a catch to short midwicket off Randiv. But the two unbeaten batsmen put India on course by taking singles and twos, plenty of which were accumulated through mid-on, mid-off, point and midwicket as the series victory began to slip out of Sri Lanka's grasp.
