The joke goes, 'How do you know if someone has an iPhone?' Answer: 'They tell you.' So Apple's phones always seem to be everywhere, whereas they're in fact largely confined to Britain's smuggest postcodes - and rivals such as BlackBerry still do very well.

The problem is, a lot of people think BlackBerrys are boring - or worse, they're a human leash that lets their boss enquire about sales results just when they're about to swim up to the wet bar on holiday.

The various attempts to inject 'fun' into the BlackBerry universe - ie, the lumpish Storm flatscreen - have largely failed, except for luring a few hyperactive teens to rely on instant messenger for their 4,500 messages per day.

The Torch is the latest attempt to break free from the pinstripe brigade - riding a trend for handsets that have both a touchscreeen and a keyboard (see the rivals, above).

And for a certain kind of phone user, it hits the nail on the head. The metal Torch has a very decent pinching, pulling touchscreen but behind that, the reassuring lumps of a full-sized BlackBerry QWERTY.

 

This will reliably turn iPhone users green as you hit the Send button on your third email while they're still prodding away impotently at their first line.
