inflation-upInflation in Sri Lanka hit a one-year high in February as low interest rates spurred consumer demand for goods and as commodity prices rose, data showed on Friday.

Consumer prices rose 6.9 percent this month from year-ago levels, its highest since February 2009 and edging up from last month's 6.5 percent. Inflation hit a record high of 28.2 percent in June 2008 as global oil prices surged.

Sri_Lankan_EconomyThe International Monetary Fund (IMF) said late Thursday the Sri Lankan economy continues to show signs of recovery, although below its potential and an uptick in inflation.

The IMF just completed a 10-day visit to Sri Lanka  to hold discussions on performance and policies under the $2.6 billion Stand-By Arrangement, approved by the Board on July 24, 2009. The next step in the process, the IMF said, entails an IMF staff visit to Colombo, following parliamentary elections and the formation of the new cabinet, to discuss with the government its plans for a full-year 2010 budget, including tax reform measures.

Sri_Lankan_teaSri Lankan tea prices at the Colombo auctions fell for the second week running this week on bigger volumes and lower quality, although production was recovering, brokers said.

Teas from estates, mostly run by regional plantations companies, fell 20-40 rupees a kilo, they said.
"Overall quality of offerings was lower to previous with the fair weight of the offerings comprising of fair average quality teas," Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers said in a market report.

Sri Lanka renegotiating GSP+ on legitimate reasons PDF Print E-mail

G.L._PeirisThe Sri Lankan government said today that it is attempting to renegotiate the European Union's Generalized System of Preferences plus (GSP+) tariff concession purely on legitimate reasons.

Addressing a media briefing held at the Government Information Department today, the government spokesman Minister of Export Development and International Trade Prof. G.L. Peiris said the government will continue to benefit from the trade agreement for another six months.

Sri Lanka to start ocean survey in oil search PDF Print E-mail

ocean_surveyCairn India which is exploring for oil in Sri Lankan waters is to start gathering meteorological data and monitor ocean currents next month ahead of a test drilling programme.

The sub-contract for the 'metocean and currents survey' in the Gulf of Mannar is to be awarded soon, said Neil de Silva, head of Sri Lanka's petroleum resources development secretariat overseeing exploration efforts.
