Sri Lanka state railways lose Rs4.7bn in 2009 PDF Print E-mail

sri_lanka_trainsSri Lanka's state-run railways lost 4,768 million rupees in 2009 up 4.7 percent from the a year earlier, which was more than its annual revenues, while carrying lower volumes of cargo and passengers, the latest official data shows.

Sri Lanka Railways operated 4,568 million passenger kilometres in 2009, down 2.2 percent from a year earlier, while freight ton kilometres also fell 2.2 percent to 118 million, the Central Bank said in its annual report.
Operating expenses went up 6.8 percent to 8,788 million rupees from 8,225 million rupees a year earlier. Its operating expenses are more than double the revenue.

Revenues rose 9.5 percent to 4,020 million from 3,671 million.

Unit trust value tops Rs. 11 billion PDF Print E-mail

Channa_de_SilvaThe Net Asset Value (NAV) of the unit trust industry has reached Rs 11 billion by February this year.

It was Rs 6.7 billion in 2008 December.

There are 564 million units and over 23,000 unit holders now.

Around 65 percent of the NAV has been invested in equities while the balance is invested in fixed income, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Director General Channa de Silva said.

Bogala_GraphiteSri Lanka's listed graphite miner and exporter Bogala Graphite said support from its German parent firm and manufacture of new lubricant products should help it recover from losses last year.

The company, a subsidiary of Graphit Krophmuhl AG of Germany, has seen a slight increase in orders in the last quarter of 2009 which heralds a turnaround, its chairman Vijaya Malalasekera said.

Sri_Lankas_economySri Lanka's economy is poised to expand by 6.5 percent this year, the central bank said Monday, after slower growth in 2009 due to the operation to crush the Tamil Tigers and the global crisis.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka in its annual review of the economy said the intense fighting was one reason for growth of just 3.5 percent in 2009.
