Zahira ruggerites scrum down in memory of soldiers

  • PDF

zccLogoTime has come again for the old and present boys’ of Zahira College, Colombo to remember the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the sovereignty of the motherland. They have organised a rugby encounter between the present and past rugby players on October 4 at Maradana in memory of the late Major Infthikar Yoonoos. The event has now become an annual affair.

Major Inthikar Yoonoos Memorial Trophy was initially organised by the Group of 90’s and Group of 2002 that has become an integral part of the Zahira College rugby calendar. This year however, the Zahirians have taken another step forward by expanding the memorial trophy awarded in memory of an individual to that of all servicemen produced by Zahira, who lost their lives in the battlefield.

Simply APPALLING !

SangaAfter such an ebullient start, Sri Lanka have somehow pushed themselves to the very brink of this tournament, with a little help from England and New Zealand. Their 38-run loss today to New Zealand to end their group phase now means their fate is in the hands of others; having kick-started the Champions Trophy with a wonderful opening-day win against the hosts South Africa, it is a fate not many expected to befall them. Little about this tournament has been easy to predict.

Sri Lanka gave the game away in many areas today. Having dropped Muttiah Muralitharan and brought in Thilan Thushara, their new-ball pair began poorly. After getting back into it at 161 for 5, again the bowlers threw it away, though Kumar Sangakkara directed his gaze elsewhere.

Sri Lanka not underestimating England

  • PDF

Trevor-BaylissEngland are still smarting from a humiliating 6-1 defeat against Australia and arrived in South Africa late, with no time for a warm-up match and little time to acclimatize to local conditions. Sri Lanka have just beaten South Africa, the tournament favourites and until recently the No. 1 ODI side in the world. They are unquestionably favourites going into Friday's Group B match at the Wanderers but Trevor Bayliss, the Sri Lanka coach, has said his side is "not taking any team lightly" in a tournament where one bad match could cripple the campaign.

"We're happy with the way we played in the first game. Taking on South Africa in South Africa was never going to be an easy task but the boys were up for it," Bayliss said. "We are concentrating on what we do well but know they [England] will come out hard. There is no way we are going to underestimate them. England will move on from that series [against Australia]. It's a series gone by and they will be out to set the record straight."

Dilshan and Mendis drub South Africa in rain-hit game

  • PDF

A-MendisLed by a blazing century from Tillakaratne Dilshan and a brace of cameos, the world's No. 5 team started their Champions Trophy campaign in fine style by beating the top-ranked side. Graeme Smith's decision to field was based on the lack of dew in the afternoon but none of the bowlers, barring Dale Steyn, made an impression. Dilshan's 92-ball 106, coupled with significant inputs from captains past and present, lifted them to a daunting total that was well beyond South Africa.

Sri Lanka carried the energy from their powerful batting display into the field and Ajantha Mendis, unlike the home side's spinners, extracted bounce and turn under lights. Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis showed signs of dominance with an 81-run stand in quick time but once Smith was bowled off Mendis' first delivery, and Kallis and JP Duminy fell in successive balls, Sri Lanka could apply the chokehold.

Dilshan and Jayawardene lead SL to 319

T-Dilshan50 overs Sri Lanka 319 for 8 (Dilshan 106, Jayawardene 77, Sangakkara 54) v South Africa

Graeme Smith's decision to field in the Champions Trophy opener backfired and the world was again witness to the reason why South Africa's ability has long been questioned in major tournaments. A promising start by Dale Steyn swiftly dissipated into a run-fest in Centurion as Tillakaratne Dilshan set the tone with an exceptional century and Mahela Jayawardene ensured Sri Lanka didn't lose steam after a double blow. Sri Lanka have lost only once after posting a 300-plus total, and with Muttiah Muralitharan back, the masters of asphyxiation will take the field extremely confident.
