lanka_tourisumMany countries have identified Sri Lanka as one of the safest destinations after the cessation of terrorism in the country in May last year.

This is the most significant development in the country’s tourism industry due to the Government eradicating terrorism from Sri Lanka, Tourism Minister Achala Jagoda told the Sunday Observer.

After terrorism was eradicated several countries recognised Sri Lanka as the safest place for their citizens. The number of tourist arrivals recorded a significant increase this year, while tourists have shown a keen interest to travel to Sri Lanka.Therefore, the tourism industry will thrive in the coming years, he said.

LeopardsEco-tourism boom expected at country’s largest national park

One of Asia’s most promising locations for spotting leopards has reopened to the public.

Wilpattu National Park in northwest Sri Lanka was closed for many years as the government battled against Tamil Tiger (LTTE) separatists, who used the park as a conduit for men and materials. The forested park – Sri Lanka’s largest, at 1,316km2 – is renowned for its sizeable leopard population, and is also home to numerous large elephants and sloth bears.

Developing tourism in Sri Lanka and challenges PDF Print E-mail

Lanka_TravelTourism industry participants, both in Sri Lanka and abroad, agree that there is a number of reasons why the Government should now begin to think out of the box about the tourism sector and prepare a strategic plan for the next ten years. Most important of the reasons is our country’s unique and abundant natural resources and the hospitality skills of our people. Some of them also believe that there should be a change in our brand projection.

In the promotion of tourism internationally, it is suggested Sri Lanka ideally should be represented as a rural holiday destination. This concept makes sense. It is a fact that in coming to Sri Lanka, visitors are motivated by the perception of beautiful virgin scenery, opportunities for sightseeing, and relaxed pace of life. It is necessary therefore to take account of the global trends in tourism, which may impact on the sector in Sri Lanka, and especially on tourism flows to rural areas.
