Greece crisis: Short-selling banned on Greek markets PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 April 2010 09:07

greeceGreek regulators have announced a ban on short-selling on Greece's stock market, following steep falls in bank shares.

The ban is designed to prevent investors betting on falls in share prices - believed to undermine confidence in the market.

On Tuesday, Greek bank shares fell 9% amid continued concern over Greece's public finances.

The move also follows big falls in Asian markets on Wednesday.

Japan's leading share index, the Nikkei 225, closed down more than 2.5% after steep falls in European stocks on Tuesday.

Flights resume as ash fear recedes PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 21 April 2010 11:05

Ban_EndsAirlines and passengers face a slow return to normality as flights resume after a six-day shutdown because of volcanic ash.

Tens of thousands of Britons are still stranded abroad and it could take weeks to get back to business as usual.

Further delays and cancellations are occurring because of the backlog and planes not being in the right place.

Aviation officials lifted the airspace ban on Tuesday night, saying it was now safe for planes to fly.

Heathrow would normally handle about 1,250 flights on an average Wednesday but the departures and arrivals boards at the west London airport were full of cancellations.

Airlines condemn 'European mess' PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 19 April 2010 13:12

European_messThe body that represents the world's airlines, IATA, has criticised Europe's governments for the way they closed air space because of volcanic ash.

The head of the airline industry body, Giovanni Bisignani, told the BBC: "This is a European embarrassment and it's a European mess."

Millions of passengers have been affected by the crisis, which is now into its fifth day.

Britain ordered three Royal Navy ships to help bring home stranded nationals.

And the French railway company SNCF has said it will offer reduced fares and 80,000 extra seats between Paris and London this week.

Volcanic ash spreads more travel misery across Europe PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 18 April 2010 09:40

Fligh_MiseryMillions of stranded travellers face further air chaos as the volcanic ash from Iceland that has closed most of Europe's airspace continues to spread.

An estimated three-quarters of flights were cancelled on Saturday. About 20 countries closed their airspace - some have extended flight bans into Monday.

Disruption is now said to be greater than that after 9/11 and the volcanic activity shows no sign of abating.

Two airlines say they have successfully carried out test flights.

The Netherlands' KLM said one of its planes, a Boeing 737, had reached its maximum operating altitude of about 13km in the skies over the Netherlands, and there had been no problems during the flight.

The aircraft and its engines were being inspected for possible damage. After the results of that technical inspection the airline hopes to get permission from the aviation authorities to start up operations again.
