Israel and US discuss settlements

NetanyahuIsraeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is meeting US envoy George Mitchell in a renewed drive to reach a deal on Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.

The US has been pushing for a complete end to Israeli construction in the hope of kick-starting stalled peace talks.

The meeting in London follows talks with UK PM Gordon Brown, when Mr Netanyahu rejected any construction freeze in occupied East Jerusalem.

He repeated his demand the Palestinians recognise Israel as a Jewish state.

European, Asian Stocks Drop; Oil, Metals Decline as Yen Gains

Stocks declined in Europe and Asia and oil retreated for the first time in six days as banking chiefs from China to the U.S. warned that asset prices are high given the outlook for the economy.

The MSCI World Index of 23 developed nations slipped 0.1 percent at 12:20 p.m. in London after a five-day, 5.2 percent rally. Futures on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index added 0.2 percent. Oil slid as much as 1.3 percent from a 10-month high in New York, while copper sank for the first time in four days on the London Metal Exchange. The yen strengthened against all 16 of the most-traded currencies tracked by Bloomberg.

Greece declares state of emergency as forest fires reach Athens

Thousands of Greeks were battling to save their homes from forest fires raging out of control on the outskirts of Athens as authorities declared a state of emergency and mobilised the army today in the capital. Gale-force winds hampered firefighting efforts for a second day as the flames encroached on the city's outer suburbs.

Officials appealed to residents to evacuate but some Athenians remained in their homes to try to battle the inferno with hoses and buckets. The Greek government has appealed for help from Italy, France and Cyprus. State-run institutions, including the children's hospital in Pendeli, were abandoned as the flames spread.

India’s main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party expelled Jaswant Singh, former finance and foreign minister, party chief Rajnath Singh said today from the northern town of Shimla.

 The move by the Hindu-nationalist party comes after Singh praised Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of neighboring Pakistan, in his recent book on the leader, “Jinnah -- India, Partition, Independence.”

Missing Russian vessel hijacked, crew rescued

MOSCOW, The missing Russian vessel, the Arctic Sea, had been hijacked by a group of Estonians, Latvians and Russians, and was rescued by the Russian navy, Russia's defense minister said Tuesday.

 Anatoly Serdyukov said the Russian crew was rescued without a single shot, and the navy arrested eight people in connection with the hijacking that occurred in Swedish territorial waters, news agencies reported.
