China earthquake kills hundreds in Qinghai

ChinaQuakeSome 400 people have died and thousands are feared injured after a magnitude-6.9 quake hit western China's Qinghai province, officials say.

The powerful tremor struck remote Yushu county, 800km (500 miles) south-west of the provincial capital Xining, at 0749 (2349 GMT), at a shallow depth of 10km.

Most of the buildings in the worst-hit town of Jiegu were wrecked, and landslides have cut off roads.

Police said hundreds of survivors had already been pulled from the rubble.

And at least one aid flight had been able to land at the local airport, according to officials.

Senior Yushu official Huang Liming announced the latest death toll of 400, as the extent of the damage became clearer.

Polish first lady's body is returned to Warsaw

Thailand's red-shirt protesters occupy TV compound

Red_TThousands of Thai protesters have broken through police and army lines to occupy a building at a satellite station compound north of Bangkok.

Tear gas was used against the crowd but the anti-government protesters regrouped and pushed back, forcing the security forces to retreat.

The opposition People Channel was shut by the government on Thursday under a state of emergency imposed in the city.

It follows a month-long protest aimed at ousting the prime minister.

US and Russian leaders hail nuclear arms treaty

USRUSSIAUS President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, have signed a landmark nuclear arms treaty in the Czech capital, Prague.

The treaty commits the former Cold War enemies to each reduce the number of deployed strategic warheads to 1,550 - 30% lower than the previous ceiling.

Mr Obama said it was a key milestone, but only the "first step on a longer journey" of nuclear disarmament.

Gordon Brown calls 6 May general election

Flanked by his entire cabinet, Mr Brown said it was the "least well-kept secret of recent years".
